Tragic Ski Lift Collision Claims Life of German Tourist in Montenegro

A tragic incident occurred at the Savin Kuk ski resort in northern Montenegro on December 21, 2023, when a German tourist fell approximately 230 feet from a ski lift following a collision. The 34-year-old man was riding alongside his wife, who sustained serious injuries during the accident.

According to reports from reputable sources, including German newspaper Die Frankfurter Rundschau and Montenegrin outlets Vijesti and Pobjeda, the collision involved two double chairlifts. During an otherwise regular day on the slopes, one of the cable car baskets slipped and collided with another basket, resulting in the fatal fall. Witnesses indicated that the impact caused the man to lose his balance and plunge from the lift. His wife, a 30-year-old woman, remained trapped in the basket and was later taken to a hospital with a fractured femur and a head injury.

Local authorities promptly closed the ski lift following the crash to facilitate a preliminary investigation into the incident. The shutdown led to at least three additional tourists being stranded on the lift for several hours until rescue workers could evacuate them. This evacuation operation took place under challenging weather conditions in the rugged Durmitor Mountains.

As of now, the identities of the victims have not been publicly disclosed, and the cause of the collision remains undetermined. Rados Zugic, the Mayor of Žabljak, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the accident. He stated, “We insist on a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine who is responsible.”

Montenegro, known for its stunning mountain landscapes, has become a popular skiing destination in recent years. The Savin Kuk ski resort, in particular, attracts many tourists seeking winter sports experiences at affordable prices.
