Hillcrest Golf Club Opens Its Doors for a New Season on March 31

Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango will officially open for the 2024 season on March 31, 2024. While the putting greens and driving range have been available for practice, local golfers are eager to hit the fairways for their first rounds of the year. Tee times can now be scheduled, allowing players to embrace the warmer weather.

General Manager and Director of Golf Michael McCloskey expressed enthusiasm about the opening, noting that the course has emerged from winter in good condition. “People are all very excited to write the winter off and focus on summer activities,” he said. The mild winter has prevented the typical ice damage usually seen at this time of year, and sufficient moisture has helped maintain the health of the grass.

The club is opening approximately two weeks ahead of its usual schedule, thanks to favorable conditions. The irrigation system has been operational for the past two weeks, and McCloskey is optimistic about the course’s readiness for opening day.

Leadership Changes at Hillcrest

A significant transition is underway at Hillcrest as Will Herz, the golf course superintendent for the past 30 years, prepares for retirement at the end of the month. Kaelen Waters, a Durango native with a background in golf course maintenance from Colorado State University, will take over the role. Waters has previously served as superintendent at TPC Colorado and was involved in the construction of Raindance National Golf Club in Windsor.

McCloskey expressed deep gratitude for Herz’s contributions to the club, stating, “Words don’t say enough for the thanks and appreciation that our entire community owes Will for his time here. He’s an exceptional leader and agronomist.” This leadership change marks a new chapter for Hillcrest, which remains committed to maintaining its high standards as it continues to thrive.

Upcoming Events and Community Engagement

As the 2024 season unfolds, there are no immediate plans for course modifications. Instead, Hillcrest aims to enhance its community presence. McCloskey and his team are focusing on making the clubhouse more accessible and inviting for non-golfers, promoting a vibrant club atmosphere.

Two major events are scheduled for the upcoming months. The Across the Border tournament will take place at Hillcrest and Piñon Hills Golf Course on May 2-3, in collaboration with First Tee Four Corners. Additionally, Hillcrest’s signature event, the Navajo Trail Open, will run from June 18-21, with registration currently open.

For those looking to enjoy the season, season passes remain at last year’s price, but the early bird discount will end on March 31. Hillcrest Golf Club is poised for an exciting year, welcoming both seasoned players and newcomers to its fairways.
