San Pedro Community Remembers John “Jack” Paul Brown, 92

John “Jack” Paul Brown, a longtime resident of San Pedro, California, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 92, surrounded by his family. His contributions to the community and his loving family life have left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, Jack grew up in San Pedro. His childhood was filled with cherished memories, including catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving in port. He began his career early, working at Helen Grace Chocolates and assisting his father as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II.

Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School. Before the Vincent Thomas Bridge was constructed, he would take a ferry across the harbor to reach school. A dedicated athlete, Jack was a distance runner on the Track and Field team, earning several accolades during his high school years. He continued to pursue running while obtaining a degree in Drafting from college.

After completing his education, Jack began his professional career at Northrop Grumman. He later took a bold step by starting his own business, where he employed friends and colleagues he met throughout his journey.

In 1969, he met the love of his life, Rita Cebula. The couple married on April 17, 1971, and welcomed two children: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. Family played a central role in Jack’s life, and he and Rita were deeply involved in their church community. Rita dedicated 25 years as a teacher at Holy Trinity Church, nurturing many young minds.

Jack enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including gardening, sports, and DIY projects. He was also an avid coin collector and had a unique sense of humor that brought laughter to his family. Each day began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent, and his sister, Agnes Welsh. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, brother Robert, sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass is scheduled for January 10, 2026, at 10:00 am at Holy Trinity Church, followed by burial at Green Hills Memorial Park.
