Urgent Winter Storm Watch Issued for Oneida County Through Saturday
UPDATE: A winter storm watch has been issued for Oneida County, effective from 7 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Residents are warned to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions as heavy lake effect snow is expected, with accumulations exceeding 7 inches in some areas.
The National Weather Service cautions that snow bands will fluctuate across the region, leading to uncertain snowfall totals. “Travel could be very difficult,” officials report, emphasizing that the severe weather could significantly impact both Friday morning and evening commutes.
This urgent weather warning comes as winter conditions pose serious risks, contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries each year. Motorists are reminded to prioritize safety during these treacherous conditions.
As temperatures hover near freezing, drivers should assume icy roadways and adjust their speed accordingly. Accumulating ice on power lines and tree branches can lead to dangerous snapping hazards. If traveling is necessary, opt for routes with fewer trees and power lines, and avoid driving altogether if possible.
For those who must venture out, the National Weather Service advises preparation:
– Ensure your gas tank is full.
– Equip your vehicle with essential winter supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, and warm clothing.
– Share your travel plans with family or friends, including your destination, route, and estimated time of arrival.
In case you become stranded, remain calm and inform someone about your location. Indicate distress by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna and keep your vehicle visible using dome lights and flashers.
Additionally, keep an eye out for snow plows and give them ample space to operate safely. Overtake plows only when the road ahead is clear.
Before hitting the road, check the latest conditions to ensure a safe journey. With winter weather bearing down on Oneida County, following these tips will help to mitigate risk and keep you safe.
Stay informed about the latest developments as this situation unfolds, and monitor updates from the National Weather Service to adapt your plans accordingly.
