New Year’s Eve Safety Tips: Officials Urge Planning Ahead
URGENT UPDATE: As New Year’s Eve approaches, officials in Fresno, California are stressing the importance of safety and planning ahead for celebrations this year. With bars expecting a surge in patrons, authorities urge revelers to prioritize their well-being to ensure a fun and secure night.
According to local bar owner Lewis Everk, New Year’s Eve is notorious for drawing “amateur” party-goers who typically don’t frequent bars. “It’s one of the busiest days for bars, and with that comes risk,” Everk stated. He emphasized that if patrons feel unsafe at any point, they should immediately seek help from bar staff.
To combat potential dangers, California law mandates that bars provide Naloxone (commonly known as NarCan) and drink-testing kits for patrons. While this is a positive step, officials advise that it should not serve as a primary safety net.
Clovis Police Sgt. Sean O’Brien highlights the significance of communication and companionship. “Let people know where you’re going, when you plan to arrive, and when you plan to leave,” he urged. “Make sure that you’re going out with people who have got your back.”
Another critical point made by officials is the necessity of arranging safe transportation ahead of time. Rideshare services are recommended, but O’Brien cautioned users to verify driver details. “All rideshare services have safety protocols to confirm the driver’s identity and vehicle information. Always double-check that information,” he warned.
Bar owners like Everk are committed to promoting safety by cutting off patrons who may have had too much to drink. “I’d rather have somebody mad at me for cutting them off than have to know that they didn’t make it home,” he emphasized, reflecting the communal responsibility of ensuring everyone returns safely.
As festivities commence tonight, remember that planning ahead can save lives. Make arrangements for a safe ride, stay with friends, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if needed. This New Year’s Eve, let’s celebrate responsibly and look out for one another.
Stay safe, Fresno, and have a happy New Year!
