As Week 17 of the fantasy football season approaches, several running backs are generating significant attention due to injuries, matchups, and performance fluctuations. Key players such as Josh Jacobs of the Green Bay Packers and Ashton Jeanty are in the spotlight as fantasy managers prepare for championship matchups.

Injury Concerns for Josh Jacobs

Josh Jacobs has been contending with a persistent knee injury since November. Despite his determination to play, his participation in the Packers’ offensive snaps has noticeably decreased. In Week 16, Jacobs played just 38.9% of the snaps, while teammate Emanuel Wilson took the field for 45.8%. This reduction limited Jacobs to only 28 snaps, his lowest count of the season outside of Week 11 when he first sustained the injury.

Wilson, on the other hand, capitalized on the opportunity, gaining 82 yards on 14 carries. As Jacobs continues to navigate this injury, fantasy managers should brace for the possibility of a reduced workload as the team aims for a playoff push. His 3.4 yards per touch in the last game marked one of the least productive outings of his season. The Packers face the Baltimore Ravens and the Minnesota Vikings in upcoming matchups, which could further impact Jacobs’ performance.

Ashton Jeanty Poised for a Big Week

Rookie running back Ashton Jeanty has provided a rollercoaster experience for fantasy managers during his inaugural season. After showing promise with two games exceeding 30 fantasy points, Jeanty delivered his second-highest score of the season in Week 16, demonstrating his potential to produce under pressure.

As he gears up for Week 17, Jeanty will face the New York Giants, a team that has struggled defensively against running backs, allowing the second-most fantasy points and rushing yards this season. With Jeanty typically receiving significant touches—over 17 in all but five games—fantasy managers looking for a strong performance should keep him in their lineups.

Saquon Barkley Heating Up

After a slow start to the 2025 season, Saquon Barkley is finally hitting his stride, making him a valuable asset as fantasy championships approach. Over the past three weeks, Barkley has averaged over 5.3 yards per carry and has seen more than 20 touches per game. In Week 16, he recorded 132 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, scoring 21.2 points in PPR formats.

His upcoming matchup against the Buffalo Bills presents a favorable opportunity, as the Bills have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to running backs this season. Notably, four different running backs have surpassed 18 fantasy points against Buffalo since Week 10, indicating Barkley could be primed for another standout performance.

New York Giants Turn to Tyrone Tracy Jr.

As the season closes, the New York Giants are leaning heavily on Tyrone Tracy Jr. as their primary running back. After a brief surge in usage for Devin Singletary, who has only seen 16 carries over the last two games, Tracy has been the more reliable option with over 15 touches in five of the past six contests.

While the Giants’ offensive potential has been limited, Tracy’s consistent production makes him a viable option for fantasy managers seeking a steady contribution in their championship week. He will face the Las Vegas Raiders, who rank among the bottom in fantasy points allowed to running backs this season.

Cardinals’ Backfield in Flux

The Arizona Cardinals have faced significant challenges in their backfield due to injuries. With key players such as James Conner and Bam Knight sidelined, the team has resorted to a three-back rotation featuring Michael Carter, Corey Kiner, and Emari Demercado.

In their first game without Knight, the trio combined for a modest performance, with Kiner being the only back to receive red-zone carries. Although Carter is expected to lead the group, the rotation could limit the fantasy upside for all involved, especially as they prepare to compete against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams in the following weeks.

As championship week unfolds, these developments among running backs will significantly influence fantasy strategies. Managers should stay informed on injury reports and matchup statistics to maximize their lineups and navigate the final stretch of the season successfully.
