A 19-year-old man has pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a police pursuit that lasted over 30 miles while an infant was in the vehicle. Tandyn Hall entered the plea deal on Tuesday, addressing charges of fleeing an officer and child abuse in the third and fourth degree. As part of the agreement, several other charges, including child abuse in the second degree and operating a vehicle with a suspended license, were dismissed.

The incident began around 10:00 on November 11, 2023, when a police officer from the Fremont Police Department attempted to pull Hall over for a traffic violation. Instead of complying, Hall led officers on a chase that covered approximately 32 miles through Newaygo, culminating near the intersection of South Poplar Avenue and 28th Street when his vehicle became inoperable.

Upon his apprehension, officers found a six-month-old child inside the vehicle who was not properly restrained. Medical staff evaluated the child, determining there were no serious injuries, allowing for a quick release after the examination.

Swift Action by Police

In a statement following the incident, Chief Tim Rodwell praised the actions of his officers. “Our officers acted swiftly to protect not only the public but also those inside the vehicle,” he said. He emphasized the importance of community safety, particularly for vulnerable individuals, stating, “We are deeply grateful that no one was seriously hurt and that the child received immediate care. Incidents like this remind us of our shared responsibility to keep one another safe—especially our youngest and most vulnerable residents.”

The authorities released a female passenger at the scene, while Hall was taken into custody without further incident. He is scheduled for sentencing on February 25, 2024, at 10:10 a.m.

This case highlights significant concerns regarding child safety and responsible driving, especially in scenarios involving young children. The community’s response remains focused on ensuring the safety of its residents and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.
