Overturned Truck Spills 15,000 Crabs in County Donegal Rescue Effort
A transport truck carrying approximately 15,000 live crabs overturned on January 12, 2024, on a highway in County Donegal, causing an unusual scene as the crustaceans attempted to escape to the Atlantic Ocean. The driver was unharmed, but the incident prompted a significant recovery operation involving local volunteers.
Odham McLaughlin, owner of McLaughlin’s Car Dismantlers and Recovery, received the call about the overturned vehicle while it was en route to restaurants in Portugal, carrying crabs valued at around €90,000 (about $97,000). Initially, McLaughlin viewed it as a routine incident, but his concern escalated upon learning the truck’s cargo was live seafood. The overturned truck’s aluminum container burst open, allowing the crabs to escape in their frantic bid for freedom.
In response to the situation, Donegal County Council quickly closed the road to facilitate a large-scale recovery effort. Upon arriving at the scene, McLaughlin described the crabs as “skittering all over.” Recognizing the need for additional help, he reached out to nearby villages, including Burnfoot, Greencastle, and Moville, where he enlisted volunteers from the local community.
The rescue operation drew approximately 80 men, women, and children, who worked diligently for around 18 hours, even through the night. They gathered the crabs into sandbags and used a crane to return them to their container. Remarkably, the volunteers managed to recover about 95 percent of the crabs, although a few were lost during the chaos. McLaughlin noted, “Everybody from the village came in to help. I don’t think it’ll ever be forgotten.”
Despite the successful recovery, the situation took a disappointing turn. Following the rescue, McLaughlin was informed that the entire batch of crabs would have to be disposed of because they were deemed unfit for human consumption after their ordeal. This unexpected development left McLaughlin frustrated, as the efforts of the community could not save the crabs from being wasted.
The incident highlights not only the challenges faced in the transport industry but also the spirit of community in County Donegal, as locals came together to respond to an unusual and pressing crisis.
