ICE Detains Over a Dozen MSP Airport Workers Amid Operations
More than a dozen workers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, according to **Unite Here Local 17**, a union representing over **6,000** hospitality workers in the Minneapolis area. The detentions occurred as these employees arrived for their shifts, part of a larger operation that has heightened ICE’s presence at the airport.
ICE’s intensified oversight at MSP is part of a three-week operation aimed at increasing enforcement efforts in the region. Agents are reportedly stationed throughout the airport, including on jet bridges, to check documents of both travelers and airport employees. This operation aligns with a broader enforcement strategy in Minneapolis, where civil unrest has escalated in recent years.
The apprehensions primarily involve workers in hospitality roles, such as retail and dining, who were detained shortly after clearing TSA security. **Wade Luneburg**, political director of Unite Here Local 17, recounted that many individuals were taken away just as they headed to work. Some were apprehended after finishing their shifts at an airport restaurant. Luneburg stated, “They came through the TSA line, and then were quickly detained by ICE or Border Patrol, or some other law enforcement agency. [It was] on the back-end of security and they were just taken away.”
Expanded ICE Activities at MSP
Earlier this week, a leaked memo revealed further details about ICE’s expanded activities at MSP. Agents are now conducting checks beyond security areas, with a significant focus on both incoming travelers and airport staff. Although U.S. citizens are not legally required to present identification to ICE agents, cooperation is advised to prevent misunderstandings that could lead to detention. Instances of U.S. citizens being detained after presenting legitimate identification have raised concerns about the legality of these operations.
The presence of ICE at MSP has been met with criticism, particularly regarding potential violations of the **Fourth Amendment**, which safeguards individuals from unreasonable searches. As a key hub for **Delta Air Lines**, MSP services over **37 million** passengers annually, and travelers should be prepared for possible document checks and questioning.
From **May 2025**, travelers without a **REAL ID** or an approved form of identification may face new protocols, including an **$18** biometric check fee, which could lead to delays or denied boarding at TSA checkpoints.
Wider Implications of Immigration Enforcement
The recent activities of ICE agents have sparked national discussions about immigration enforcement at airports, particularly in Minneapolis. Federal agents are permitted access to airport facilities, and while the **Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC)** has stated that the Airport Police Department does not receive advance notice of ICE operations, it clarified that federal agents have “broad access” to the airport environment.
Notably, MSP has seen an increase in deportation flights, with reports indicating an uptick from one or two flights per week to around **two daily flights** in recent weeks. This rise in deportation activities has led to large protests around the airport, reflecting the heightened public concern regarding the implications of such enforcement actions.
In summary, the recent detentions of MSP workers by ICE highlight an ongoing trend of increased immigration enforcement at U.S. airports, raising important questions about legal rights and the impact on local communities. As the situation evolves, both workers and travelers are urged to remain informed about their rights and the operational changes at MSP.
