Long-Distance Rail Services Resume in Northern Germany After Storm
Long-distance rail services in northern Germany have resumed following interruptions caused by the severe winter storm, Elli. The rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, announced on Sunday morning that all main routes are operational again, although passengers should expect a reduced service and potential cancellations.
Deutsche Bahn had completely halted long-distance services in the region on March 8, 2024, as the storm significantly impacted travel conditions. In a statement released Saturday, the company indicated its intention to gradually reinstate services, starting with the Hamburg–Bremen–Osnabrück–Frankfurt route, which resumed operations that afternoon.
In addition, services connecting Hamburg to southern Germany via Hanover and Kassel, as well as routes from Berlin to major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, also began operating early Sunday. While these services are back on track, Deutsche Bahn cautioned that they are not yet running at full capacity.
Gradual Restoration of Services
Deutsche Bahn further noted that routes to Denmark and the Netherlands, in addition to services along the coasts, are anticipated to resume later on Sunday. Despite these improvements, significant disruptions continue to affect local transportation in the northern states of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony.
“Several routes cannot yet be operated,” a spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn explained. “We expect gradual increases in the timetable offerings throughout the day as clearance work progresses.”
On a positive note, Hamburg’s S-Bahn commuter train network is operating “largely as normal,” providing some relief for local travelers. Deutsche Bahn recommends that passengers check the current traffic situation using the DB Navigator app or online before setting out on their journeys. A toll-free hotline is also available for inquiries.
As the situation evolves, Deutsche Bahn continues to prioritize safety and efficiency, navigating the challenges posed by the lingering effects of the storm.
