Top-seeded Elina Svitolina continued her strong performance at the WTA tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, securing a place in the quarterfinals after defeating wild-card entry Katie Boulter with a score of 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday. The match was marked by challenging windy conditions, leading to a total of nine service breaks as both players struggled to maintain their serves.

Svitolina, currently ranked 13th in the world, clinched the match on her third match point, demonstrating her resilience throughout. “Katie is a great fighter so I was expecting a tough match,” Svitolina remarked. She acknowledged Boulter’s ability to strike the ball effectively, noting that the swirling winds added an extra layer of difficulty.

The match began with Svitolina dropping her serve in the third game, only to respond immediately by breaking back. However, she faced another setback when she was broken again in the ninth game. Despite these challenges, Svitolina showcased her skill by winning crucial points to break Boulter once more and secure the first set.

In the second set, Svitolina broke Boulter in the fourth game but faced another service loss right after. Both players fought hard to hold their serves during the sixth and seventh games. A series of three consecutive breaks followed, ultimately leading to Svitolina’s second singles victory of 2026.

“Fighting for every point was crucial for me, and I’m pleased with how I managed the tough games,” Svitolina stated post-match. This victory comes after Svitolina took a break from the tour in September 2025 for mental health reasons. In her opening match in Auckland, she secured a decisive win against Varvara Gracheva, finishing with a score of 6-3, 6-1.

Reflecting on her time away from the sport, Svitolina expressed that the break was beneficial. “My fighting spirit is back, and it feels great to be refreshed and eager to work hard,” she said. “The time off really helped me reconnect with the competitive spirit I’ve had for many years.”

The Auckland tournament serves as an important preparatory event leading up to the Australian Open, which is set to commence in Melbourne on January 18, 2026. As Svitolina advances, her performance will be closely watched as she gears up for the major tournament.
