UPDATE: Longwood Elementary School in Glenwood hosted a record-breaking holiday concert on December 17, featuring over 80 students from kindergarten to fourth grade. This year’s event marked a significant increase in participation, thanks to earlier morning practices that began at 7 a.m., allowing students to join without conflicting with after-school activities.

Nine-year-old Skylar Jamison, performing for the first time, expressed her initial nerves but ended the show with joy and newfound confidence. “I felt happy,” she said after the performance, which captivated the audience. Her mother, Edrinna Jamison, noted that these practices not only fit her schedule but also helped Skylar explore her individuality.

Principal Carnisha Mayze emphasized that the increased attendance reflects the school’s commitment to involving families and fostering a supportive environment. “It takes a village,” she stated, underscoring the importance of strong relationships between school staff and parents. The event included fun activities like photo opportunities with Santa, craft stations, and hot cocoa, making it a memorable occasion for families.

Mayze opened various school facilities for the holiday event, encouraging parents to gather while their children participated in performances. This approach builds a sense of community and trust, vital for enhancing student attendance and engagement. “When children see that we have a good relationship with their families, they want to be here,” she added.

The holiday show was not just a performance; it was a platform for students to demonstrate discipline and focus through music, which Mayze believes can lead to future opportunities such as scholarships. Edrinna Jamison remarked on how choir practice has helped Skylar develop confidence and character, saying, “I’m just trying to give her more personality.”

As Longwood Elementary looks ahead, plans for next year’s holiday concert are already in discussion, aiming to create even more engaging experiences for students and their families. With a successful turnout this year, the school community is buzzing with excitement for what’s to come.
