Single Mother Struggles as Operation Holiday Aids Families Now
UPDATE: Whitney, a single mother of four, is feeling the financial strain as she finishes her last semester at Montgomery Community College in December 2023. With Christmas approaching, she faces challenges after taking a leave of absence from her job as a personal care worker to focus on her studies.
Whitney, 33, has dedicated years to her education in criminal justice but now finds herself struggling to provide a festive holiday for her children, aged 5 to 11. “I know that my degree will lead to a good career down the road, but right now we are really struggling to make ends meet,” she stated. Her determination to succeed is matched only by her need for immediate assistance.
In a heartwarming twist, Whitney is receiving support from Orion Communities, a nonprofit based in Phoenixville. The organization has provided her with gift cards to help with groceries and ensure her children have presents this Christmas. “The generosity of others is a beautiful thing,” she expressed, highlighting the kindness of her community during tough times.
This urgency is echoed through the ongoing efforts of Operation Holiday, which is now in its 35th year of supporting families in need. Established in 1991, the initiative ensures that families in Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties have food on the table and gifts under the tree during the holiday season. Last year, Operation Holiday raised nearly $85,000, providing gift cards to 366 children and grocery assistance to 189 families.
This year, Operation Holiday has partnered with 21 agencies, referring 199 families and 403 children for gifts and food assistance. The program operates without overhead, ensuring that all contributions remain local. Each family receives gift cards for groceries, allowing them to purchase holiday meals and essential pantry staples. Partnerships with local businesses, such as Weis Markets, further amplify their impact by aiding with food purchases.
Whitney’s story reflects the broader mission of Operation Holiday. “I’ve done a lot on my own,” she said. “But now I need some help and support.” She hopes to pay this kindness forward in the future, illustrating the ripple effect of community support.
For those wishing to contribute to Operation Holiday, donations are urgently needed. Online donations can be made securely through TriCounty Community Network at https://tcnetwork.org/ by selecting the Operation Holiday link. Mail-in contributions can also be sent to various addresses listed for Operation Holiday. All donations are tax-deductible and support families like Whitney’s, ensuring they can celebrate the holidays with joy.
As the program continues to grow, it is essential for community members to come together and support their neighbors. Whitney and many others are counting on this collective effort to create a brighter holiday season amid their struggles.
Stay tuned for further updates on Operation Holiday and ways you can help families in need this Christmas.
