Serra Boys Basketball Roars into CIF-SS Semifinals with 65-49 Win

UPDATE: The Serra boys basketball team has secured its spot in the CIF-SS Division 5 semifinals after a decisive 65-49 victory over Rancho Mirage on February 7, 2023. In a thrilling match held in Gardena, the Cavaliers showcased their resilience and skill, overcoming a third-quarter lead change to dominate the game.

Serra (19-13) faced an uphill battle as Rancho Mirage surged ahead in the third quarter. However, small forward CJ Anyikwa emerged as the game-changer, sinking crucial free throws and rallying the team back into the lead. With 19 points, Anyikwa’s performance was pivotal in clinching the win. “They put up an extreme fight,” Anyikwa stated post-game, highlighting the intensity of the matchup.

The game started with Serra quickly establishing dominance, racing to a 21-5 lead in the first half. Yet, Rancho Mirage fought back, closing the gap with a buzzer-beater three-pointer, ending the half only six points behind. The Rattlers’ Cash Gervin briefly lifted his team to a 28-26 lead with a three-pointer early in the third quarter, but the momentum shifted back to Serra as Anyikwa scored, triggering a second lead change of the night at 33-32.

Serra capitalized on turnovers and fouls committed by the Rattlers. Coach DeJon Frazier commented on the importance of their rigorous season, stating, “Our whole season was dedicated to the postseason.” The Cavaliers’ previous experiences have honed their skills, allowing them to thrive under pressure.

Gervin, who contributed 16 points, acknowledged the challenges of facing a high-tempo team like Serra, reflecting on their previous match against California. “We’ve seen games like this multiple times down by double digits,” he noted. Despite their efforts, Serra’s physicality proved overwhelming.

Rattlers coach Caleb Gervin recognized the impact of the challenging environment on his team’s performance. “The little mistakes and the pressure kept coming. They wore us down,” he said.

For Anyikwa, this semifinal berth is a significant milestone, echoing the Cavaliers’ state championship appearance two seasons ago. He expressed the importance of teamwork, stating, “Every person is key and vital to this ball club… everybody is learning to embrace their role and come to life.”
