MTA Deploys De-Icer Trains Amid Winter Storm Challenges

UPDATE: As New York City braces for severe winter weather, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirms the deployment of specialized de-icer trains to combat snow and ice on the tracks. This urgent measure is crucial for maintaining transit service amid ongoing winter storms affecting the region.

MTA officials report that keeping the city’s extensive rail network clear is a monumental task. The MTA has modified retired subway cars into de-icing trains equipped with tanks to spray de-icing fluid on the vital third rail. Additionally, jet blowers—repurposed engines from jets and helicopters—are deployed to blast snow and ice off outdoor tracks, generating an impressive 2,500 pounds of thrust to clear heavy snow and slush.
