Lakers Crushed by Rockets; Redick Demands Urgent Change Now
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a devastating 119-96 defeat against the Houston Rockets on December 25, 2023, marking their third consecutive loss. Lakers coach JJ Redick issued a stark warning following the game, stating, “We don’t care enough right now,” highlighting a troubling lack of professionalism within the team.
The loss was particularly alarming as it dropped the Lakers to only 4 wins in their last 10 games. Redick emphasized the need for immediate change, declaring that Saturday’s practice will be “uncomfortable” as the team prepares for their next game against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.
Reflecting on the game, Redick pointed to the glaring issues of effort and execution, stating, “When we’ve done both of those things at a high level, we’ve been a good basketball team. When we haven’t, we’re a terrible basketball team.” The Rockets dominated the game from the start, taking a commanding lead and never looking back, out-rebounding the Lakers 48-25 throughout the match.
The performance was particularly disappointing for superstar Luka Doncic, who returned from an injury only to struggle with turnovers, including three in the opening minutes. “I don’t know what has to change, but definitely something needs to change,” Doncic admitted. He acknowledged the team’s need for open communication, stating, “Everybody has got to give better effort, starting with me.”
The Lakers faced additional setbacks, as key player Austin Reaves exited the game at halftime due to calf soreness. Reaves, who had recently returned from an injury, will undergo an MRI on Friday; his status for the upcoming games remains uncertain.
The team’s morale is at a critical juncture, with Redick calling out unnamed players for their lack of preparedness and commitment. “It’s a matter of making the choice,” he said, indicating that certain players are consistently unwilling to step up. Meanwhile, LeBron James recorded only 18 points and experienced his worst plus-minus performance as a Laker, leaving the court without speaking to the media.
After the game, role players Jake LaRavia and Jarred Vanderbilt expressed their concerns about the team’s current state. “It might be a disconnect right now,” LaRavia noted, reinforcing the need for the team to regain focus. Vanderbilt added, “Certain stuff just needs to be said and certain stuff needs to be done,” echoing Redick’s call for hard conversations.
As the Lakers face increasing scrutiny, all eyes will be on their practice this Saturday and their upcoming matchup against the Kings. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Redick’s tough love approach can ignite a much-needed turnaround for the struggling team.
