Lakers Collaborate with Dodgers for Winning Strategy Shift
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Lakers are implementing a transformative strategy by collaborating with the back-to-back World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka confirmed this partnership just hours before their game against the Golden State Warriors on February 7, 2026.
In a significant announcement, Pelinka revealed how the Lakers plan to leverage the Dodgers’ success to reshape their own operations. This partnership comes on the heels of Mark Walter officially acquiring the Lakers at a staggering valuation of $10 billion in late October.
“It’s been great to have outside allies looking at the Dodgers and their remarkable success,” Pelinka stated. He emphasized the importance of consulting with Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, to learn best practices. Pelinka described Friedman as “incredibly smart” and praised his role in securing championships for the Dodgers.
As the Lakers navigate their upcoming offseason, Pelinka noted that discussions with Walter and acting governor Jeanie Buss are ongoing, focusing on ways to enhance team performance. Pelinka stated, “We’re still going through that process of how we’ll look in the offseason and what additions we’ll make. But there will be some positive changes.”
One crucial aspect of this new direction includes emulating the Dodgers’ effective draft process and farm system. Pelinka highlighted the need for a more robust front office, drawing inspiration from the Dodgers’ extensive organizational structure. “There is no expense they’ll spare in being the best sort of front office in the world,” he remarked.
This strategic shift comes as the Lakers prepare for the upcoming trade deadline and the summer roster adjustments. The team is set to have $50 million in cap space and three future first-round picks available for trades. Pelinka confirmed their aggressive approach, stating, “When you get to add the best shooter in the game to your group at the deadline, it’s a great opportunity. So, we seized it.” This refers to their recent trade of Gabe Vincent and a second-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for sharpshooter Luke Kennard.
Pelinka also addressed the complexities of the league’s new dual-apron system, suggesting that the Lakers are well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities. “Creating optionality now is really a positive thing for us this coming offseason,” he noted, hinting at potential moves in free agency and the buyout market.
As the Lakers aim to transform their franchise, the collaboration with the Dodgers marks a pivotal moment. Fans can expect significant changes and an aggressive approach to building a championship-caliber team in the near future. Stay tuned for further developments as this story unfolds.
