Kern County Students Shine at Bakersfield College Art Exhibition
The art community in Kern County is showcasing the exceptional talents of local high school students through a vibrant exhibition at Bakersfield College. This event highlights the creativity and skill of young artists from the Kern County High School District, who have been selected by their teachers for their outstanding work across various artistic mediums.
A Celebration of Young Talent
The exhibition, currently on display at the Jones Art Gallery, features a diverse array of artworks, each representing the unique capabilities of the students involved. Angel Lesnikowski, an art professor and the gallery’s director, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating that it “highlights how strong our art community is.” This sentiment underscores the importance of providing platforms for young artists to exhibit their talents.
Among the featured works, students were handpicked based on their individual achievements in specific areas of art. Notably, one piece from each category was awarded the title of “Best of” for that medium. Jordyn Dutto, a student whose multi-media art piece secured first place in the “Best of Sculpture” category, emphasized the educational power of art, stating, “Art has the power to educate and inform; that is the goal of my collection.”
Impact on Young Artists
The opportunity for these students to display their artwork in a public gallery is significant, both for their personal development and for the community. Lisa Mayo, Dutto’s art teacher, articulated the importance of such exhibitions, noting, “Having their artwork displayed in a gallery validates their voice, effort, and creative risk-taking.” She added that showcasing their work fosters confidence, pride, and a sense of belonging in the larger creative community.
Lesnikowski also highlighted the role of educators in nurturing these young talents. She stated that the exhibition is a celebration of the students’ achievements and a testament to the mentorship provided by their teachers. The collaborative effort between students and educators has created an environment where creativity can flourish.
The exhibition not only recognizes individual talents but also emphasizes the need for continued support for young artists. “It is necessary to have opportunities like these in order to foster an incredible generation of future artists,” Lesnikowski remarked, reinforcing the significance of such initiatives in the arts.
As the exhibition continues to draw attention, it serves as a reminder of the rich artistic potential within Kern County’s youth. The gallery’s vibrant display is a testament to the hard work and dedication of both students and teachers, showcasing a promising future for the arts in the region.
