Eagles’ Backups Fall 24-17 to Commanders in Playoff Preview
UPDATE: The Philadelphia Eagles’ backups stumbled in a crucial regular-season finale, losing 24-17 to the Washington Commanders on January 7, 2024, at Lincoln Financial Field. With the No. 2 seed still within reach, the Eagles (11-6) will now prepare to host the No. 6 seed, San Francisco (12-5), in the upcoming NFC Wild Card round next weekend.
The loss raises immediate concerns as the Eagles’ performance has left fans questioning the depth of the roster. Quarterback Tanner McKee showed flashes of potential, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown, but his costly interception and inconsistent accuracy ultimately stalled the team’s momentum. This marked a disappointing performance for McKee, who struggled to connect with his receivers.
The Eagles’ ground game was equally uninspiring, finishing with just 82 rushing yards. Despite Tank Bigsby averaging 4.7 yards per carry, the team failed to establish a rhythm, often finding themselves in unfavorable second-and-long situations.
The offensive line, missing several starters, faced challenges in both protection and run blocking, leading to critical breakdowns at key moments. Tight ends and receivers struggled to create separation, leaving McKee with limited options. Although Grant Calcaterra scored a red-zone touchdown and DeVonta Smith achieved over 1,000 yards for the season in limited action, the group failed to make a significant impact.
On defense, the front line showed some early promise but could not maintain pressure as the game progressed, resulting in a C+ grade for their performance. Linebackers were steady yet unspectacular, unable to thwart Washington’s rushing attack during pivotal moments. The secondary, marked by a D+ grade, allowed too many big plays, culminating in a late touchdown that sealed the Eagles’ fate.
Special teams, however, were a bright spot, with kicker Jake Elliott performing reliably and the coverage units maintaining competitive field position throughout the match.
Coaching decisions to rest starters were understandable, but the conservative approach and lack of offensive creativity raised eyebrows. The inability to make necessary in-game adjustments left the Eagles with little margin for error, resulting in the disappointing loss.
As the Eagles gear up for the playoffs, fans will be eagerly watching to see how this performance influences their strategy against the San Francisco 49ers. Will the starters return to reclaim their dominance, or will the concerns from today’s game linger into the postseason? Stay tuned for updates as the playoff picture unfolds.
