Terrell Eagles Dominate Second Half to Defeat Lady Panthers 43-19
In a highly anticipated matchup between the top two teams in the region, the Terrell Eagles triumphed over the Tiftarea Lady Panthers with a commanding score of 43-19 on January 21, 2026. The Eagles showcased an impressive defensive performance in the second half, capitalizing on the Lady Panthers’ offensive struggles.
Tay Mallory, head coach of the Lady Panthers, noted that his team lacked energy and effectiveness in the second half. “We just came out kind of flat,” Mallory said. “We just couldn’t get anything going or put the ball in the hole.” He emphasized the need for better offensive strategies, particularly in driving to the basket instead of settling for jump shots.
Initially, the game began as a tightly contested battle. The Lady Panthers took an early lead, going up 5-1 just minutes into the first quarter. However, the team’s inability to manage the ball effectively soon became evident. Turnovers began to pile up, disrupting their rhythm and preventing them from establishing a consistent offensive flow.
“We just couldn’t get the ball moving how we wanted to move it,” Mallory explained. “It was a lot of stagnant, and then we’re moving the ball around the perimeter.” This lack of movement contributed to a series of turnovers that hampered their scoring opportunities.
Despite these challenges, the Lady Panthers managed to hold a narrow lead, finishing the first quarter at 10-8. The second quarter saw the Eagles take charge after an early score, launching a 5-0 run to lead 13-12. The two teams entered a defensive stalemate for several minutes until McKenna Grace Graham hit a three-pointer just as the play clock expired. The Eagles responded with a 6-1 run to close the half, leading 19-16.
The Eagles continued their momentum into the second half, scoring the first six points of the third quarter. After Kate Coogle ended the scoring drought for the Lady Panthers with a jump shot, senior Kate Phillips added a free throw, bringing the score to 25-19. However, the Lady Panthers would not score again for the remainder of the game.
A pivotal moment occurred when Sally Master of Terrell made a near-half-court shot as the third quarter came to a close, underscoring the Eagles’ dominance. Mallory remarked, “With that team, you don’t want to let them shoot the ball, honestly, from anywhere.” He acknowledged the mixed feelings surrounding such a remarkable shot, highlighting the unpredictable nature of basketball.
The final quarter saw the Eagles completely shut out the Lady Panthers, outscoring them 15-0. This lack of offensive output turned a close game into a decisive victory for Terrell. Despite the loss, Graham stood out for Tiftarea, contributing six points, including two three-pointers, while Coogle and Phillips each scored four points.
Looking ahead, the Lady Panthers will return to their home court on January 22, 2026, for a matchup against Brookwood at 18:15. They will aim to regroup and address the issues that plagued their performance against Terrell.
