Davante Adams Returns to Playoffs as Rams Face Panthers
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Davante Adams will make his return to postseason play when the fifth-seeded Rams face the four-seed Carolina Panthers in the NFC Wild Card matchup on December 30, 2023. This marks the first playoff appearance for Adams in four years, a significant moment that underscores his appreciation for competing in high-stakes games.
As the Rams prepare for this pivotal clash, Adams emphasizes the need for focus rather than celebration. “You have to forgive me if we’re not cheesing ear to ear after the first win,” he stated. “We have to play the right type of ball first off in order to be in that position. We have bigger goals in mind than to just survive the first round of the playoffs.” Adams aims to maintain a concentrated mindset as the team strives to advance beyond this initial challenge.
Adams faced a significant hurdle when he experienced a hamstring injury during a game against the Detroit Lions in Week 15. Initially worried that the injury might prematurely end his season, he feels fortunate that he managed to exit the route safely. “I bailed out on the route when I felt the pull in my hamstring, rather than trying to catch the pass,” Adams explained. Following evaluations, he was optimistic about returning, though he ultimately missed the last three games of the regular season due to the injury and some knee soreness.
Head coach Sean McVay noted the frustration Adams felt regarding the cautious approach the team took with his recovery. “That’s one of the things that I feel like I have never really figured out is just how to manage that,” Adams commented on the mental challenges of dealing with injuries. He added, “If we had to, I could’ve gone, but just trying to give it a little bit more time just to be smart about it.”
The Rams’ offense struggled without Adams, converting only 46.1% of their red zone opportunities in his absence compared to a 66.2% success rate in the first 14 games of the season. His return is expected to significantly enhance the team’s ability to finish drives effectively. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur expressed enthusiasm about Adams’ comeback, stating, “It’s been great to have him back. He’s a competitor. Always has been, he loves being out on that grass.”
Both Adams and quarterback Matthew Stafford believe their established connection will remain intact as they head into the playoffs. “I think we have enough reps under our belt,” Stafford remarked. “He’s such a great player. I just have to put it in the ballpark and let him go do his thing.”
Adams sees this playoff opportunity as a vital part of his journey with the Rams, who he joined with the hopes of contributing to a championship run. “It’s just an overall blessing for me,” he said. “I’m just a piece in this thing… I’m just excited to be back on the field and able to give us more opportunities to do that.”
As the Rams gear up for their playoff opener, the team remains focused on their overarching goals. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as they prepare to face the Panthers and seek to advance further in the postseason.
