Crew 12 Arrives at International Space Station, Restoring Full Team

The Crew 12 astronauts successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS) on February 11, 2024, bringing the station’s crew back to a full complement of seven. Their arrival comes one month after the early return of four crew members due to a medical issue, which had temporarily reduced the station’s operational capacity.

The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule docked at the space-facing port of the Harmony module at 20:15 UTC, 34 hours after launching from the Kennedy Space Center atop a Falcon 9 rocket. Crew 12 commander Jessica Meir expressed her enthusiasm upon arrival, stating, “Grateful to be on board, and we’re ready to get to work.” This marks Meir’s second long-duration stay aboard the ISS.

Joining Meir are experienced Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev and two rookie astronauts, Jack Hathaway and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot. The crew opened the hatch and floated into the station two hours post-docking, where they were welcomed by ISS commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, cosmonaut Sergey Mikaev, and NASA astronaut Chris Williams.

During a brief ceremony, Kud-Sverchkov welcomed the new arrivals, stating, “We are happy they all arrived safe and sound. We’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time.” Meir reciprocated, highlighting the diverse international representation aboard the ISS, saying, “It is so wonderful to be back up here… so many countries represented, so many backgrounds.”

The Crew 12 astronauts shared their excitement about the journey to the ISS. Adenot, a seasoned French air force helicopter test pilot, described the ascent as “quite a ride, very fun!” She added, “The first time we looked at the Earth was, wow, mind-blowing. The Earth is so beautiful from up here.”

Crew 12 is set to replace the departing Crew 11, which included Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov. Their early departure left the ISS with only three crew members: Kud-Sverchkov, Mikaev, and Williams. While the station can function with a minimum crew, a full team is essential for conducting comprehensive research and maintaining the facility.

With Crew 12 now aboard, scientific research in the U.S. segment of the ISS will resume at full capacity, including planned spacewalks. Hathaway remarked, “Crew 12 is honored to join our Expedition 74 friends and colleagues…to add our chapter to the story of the International Space Station.”

Prior to docking, the crew conducted a private medical conference, indicating a need for a follow-up discussion after their arrival. NASA maintains strict privacy guidelines regarding astronaut health, so details about the nature of the medical issue remain undisclosed. However, it is common for astronauts to experience nausea and discomfort during their initial adaptation to weightlessness, which typically subsides after a few days in orbit.

The successful docking of Crew 12 marks an important milestone for the ISS, ensuring that collaborative international research efforts continue uninterrupted. As the crew settles in, they look forward to contributing to the ongoing scientific endeavors at one of humanity’s most significant achievements in space exploration.
