Santa Mailbox Boosts Holiday Cheer in Fitchburg, Engaging Community

FITCHBURG — The spirit of the holiday season shines brightly in Fitchburg, where postal worker Kristy Tedeschi has become a vital link between children and Santa Claus. For several years, Tedeschi has facilitated the exchange of letters between young ones and the North Pole, a task that has grown substantially since the installation of a special Santa mailbox in front of the local post office in 2017.

Before the Santa mailbox, the post office received around 30 letters annually. Last year, with the mailbox’s presence, that number surged to nearly 500. Tedeschi, who has served at the 881 Main St. location for 23 years, finds joy in preparing the letters. “Kids are so cute and they ask the funniest questions,” she remarked, highlighting her engagement with the children’s heartfelt wishes.

While the letters from children are directed to Santa, Tedeschi takes on a special role for parents. She often receives letters from adults in challenging situations, which she aims to address through fundraising efforts. “Every year I fundraise to try to help some of the adult letters,” she explained, noting the importance of community support.

In one poignant example, Tedeschi recalled helping a mother who had just escaped a domestic violence situation. “We made that Christmas happen, and I will never forget how thankful she was,” she said. Such experiences underscore the profound impact of her work and the true spirit of community collaboration during the holidays.

Festival of Trees and Community Events

In addition to the Santa mailbox initiative, Fitchburg is also celebrating the holiday season with the 20th Annual Festival of Trees, currently on display at Leominster City Hall until December 18. The event features over 50 decorated trees, a model train, and music, with proceeds from the silent auction benefiting the Mayor’s Fuel Assistance Program and supporting year-round city events.

The festival coincides with the Winter Stroll, scheduled for December 6, inviting community members to enjoy festive activities downtown. Attendees can also access an interactive map via the Leominster Lights Facebook page to explore beautifully decorated displays throughout the city.

Christmas Tree Resources for the Community

For those looking to find the perfect Christmas tree, various locations in the region are offering options. At Sholan Farms located at 1125 Pleasant St. in Leominster, volunteers are assisting customers from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the holiday season with their popular light show.

Additionally, Hollis Hills Farm at 340 Marshall Rd. in Fitchburg will close its doors for the season on December 7, providing one last opportunity for residents to secure a tree. This includes both precut options and the chance to cut one themselves.

Other nearby options include Frommer’s Christmas Trees at Kimball Farm in Lancaster, offering delivery services, and The Gardener’s Spot in Leominster, which is providing free wreaths and centerpieces to military veterans and active duty service members on December 7.
