Local Families Receive Holiday Support Through Operation Holiday

Families in the Pottsgrove area are finding much-needed support this holiday season through the annual initiative known as Operation Holiday. This community program, which began in 1991, aims to ensure that children in challenging circumstances have food on the table and presents under the tree during the festive season.

One such family is led by Isabel, a mother of three who is currently unable to work due to health issues. Isabel, whose name has been changed to protect her privacy, has turned to the Montgomery County Assistance Office for help. The office has connected her family with essential services, including the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), food stamps, and cash assistance. “They’ve helped me out a lot — with a number of things, for years,” she shared.

Despite the challenges she faces, such as a broken heater and electrical issues with her vehicle, Isabel remains optimistic. “I’m getting by,” she stated, highlighting her resourcefulness in making ends meet. The family managed to secure a Thanksgiving meal through local pantries and the Salvation Army, and they are now preparing for Christmas. Isabel’s oldest daughter has requested gift cards and art supplies, while the younger two hope for skincare products, small electronics, and winter clothing.

The recent state and federal budget stalemates, along with the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), have added financial pressure on Isabel’s family. “I had to push around my bills and use whatever I could for food,” she explained, noting that she has been able to catch up on her payments with the help of local food pantries.

Isabel actively seeks to give back to her community, assisting those in need by sharing food or providing transportation to pantries. “If I was ever in a position to donate, I would donate myself,” she said. “I know there are people in even worse shape than me who could really use the help.”

Operation Holiday: A Community Tradition

Now in its 35th year, Operation Holiday has expanded its reach across Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties, serving thousands of families. Last year, nearly $85,000 in donations provided gift cards to 366 children and grocery gift cards to 189 families. The program operates with zero overhead costs, ensuring that all funds remain within the local community. Contributions are collected and audited through a nonprofit foundation account managed by volunteers from MediaNews Group.

This year, Operation Holiday has partnered with 21 agencies, which have referred 199 families and 403 children for assistance. Families receive gift cards to local grocery stores to purchase food for holiday meals, as well as staples for their pantries. Weis Markets and Boscov’s play a key role in providing these essential resources.

To participate in Operation Holiday, families must be referred by an agency. The program is funded entirely through contributions from readers, with all donations being tax-deductible. Online donations can be made through a secure portal in partnership with TriCounty Community Network, or contributions can be mailed to specific addresses listed in local newspapers. Donors can also choose to remain anonymous or dedicate their contributions in honor or memory of loved ones.

With the community rallying together, Operation Holiday continues to provide hope and tangible support to families like Isabel’s, ensuring that the spirit of the season is felt by those who need it most.
