Matthew Lillard Hints at ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s 3’ and Epic Showdown
The sequel to the horror phenomenon, Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, has made its theatrical debut, following the record-breaking success of the first film. Directed by Emma Tammi and written by creator Scott Cawthon, the film features a star-studded cast including Josh Hutcherson, Megan Fox, and Matthew Lillard. The story continues to explore the terrifying legacy of the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza franchise, focusing on Mike Schmidt, a former security guard who must protect his sister Abby from the haunted animatronics tied to the notorious serial killer, William Afton.
The film, which opened on December 5, 2025, has garnered a mixed response from critics but has performed well at the box office, projected to earn approximately $56.5 million during its opening weekend. This figure, while lower than the first film’s opening of $80 million, still indicates a strong potential for profitability, especially considering its production budget of around $35 million.
Future Installments and Character Development
In recent statements, Lillard, who plays the enigmatic William Afton, expressed optimism about the potential for further sequels. He noted, “Our hope is that we get to do three films,” emphasizing that plans for a trilogy have always been part of the vision, contingent upon the film’s performance. While Afton has a limited presence in the current installment, appearing mainly in flashbacks, Lillard hinted at a more substantial role in future projects.
He likened his character’s situation to iconic villains in other franchises, stating, “Like Star Wars or Harry Potter, Voldemort or Darth Vader, they both sort of show up later in the series.” As the narrative unfolds, Lillard’s portrayal of Afton is expected to become more prominent, particularly following a post-credits scene that teases the character’s return in a zombified form known as Springtrap.
The sequel also leaves several unresolved plot points, particularly concerning Afton’s children. Vanessa, who aligns with Mike throughout the film, ends the story appearing to be possessed by one of Afton’s victims. Meanwhile, her brother Michael remains unaccounted for and is suggested to continue Afton’s dark legacy.
Anticipation for the Next Film
Lillard’s excitement about the potential developments in Five Nights At Freddy’s 3 is palpable. He teased fans with the prospect of an epic confrontation, saying, “We’ll get that final Harry Potter vs. Voldemort or Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader.” Despite the enthusiasm surrounding future films, he reiterated that success at the box office is crucial. “For now, we’ve got a long way to go; we’ve got to get people into the theaters,” he concluded.
As audiences flock to theaters to watch Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, the anticipation for a possible third film continues to grow, hinging on the reception and profitability of the current installment. The franchise’s unique blend of horror and nostalgia has captivated fans, ensuring that discussions about its future will persist long after the credits roll.
