Community Mourns the Passing of Mike Eggleston, 77
Michael Dennis (Mike) Eggleston, aged 77, passed away peacefully at his home on November 26, 2025. A beloved figure in his community, Mike is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Eggleston (Hopper), and their three daughters, Michelle Seipert, Becky Johnson, and Mandi Atkinson. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren, a sister, and a brother. His legacy will be remembered by many who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
Born on December 15, 1947, in Chico, California, Mike graduated from Chico High School in 1966. He began his career as a master plumber, contributing to significant projects across Northern California, including Holt Hall, Bell Memorial Union, and Enloe Hospital. Later, he transitioned to work as a piping detailer, employing computer-aided drafting for plumbing systems in various infrastructure projects, such as ethanol refineries and prisons.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mike was an enthusiastic outdoorsman. He spent countless hours exploring the dirt roads of the Western United States, pursuing deer and other big game. His love for geology and rocks led him to join the Paradise Gem and Mineral Club, where he shared his passion with others.
Mike’s family recalls his notorious “short cuts” during travels, which often added unexpected adventures and memorable stories to their journeys. He took delight in sharing his knowledge of geology with young students through “rock talks” at local elementary schools. During these sessions, he brought along various rocks, crystals, and fossils, helping children understand the rock cycle while ensuring they left with a polished rock of their own.
His generosity extended well beyond education. Mike was known for always being willing to lend his expertise and tools to help others, often refusing payment for his assistance. Many community projects benefited from his skills, and his family highlights that many tasks would have been far more challenging without his support.
A proud grandfather, Mike dedicated much of his time to his grandchildren. He often took them on adventures across the West, where they searched for rocks, hot springs, and beautiful landscapes. These experiences created lasting memories and bonds that his family will cherish forever.
The devastating Camp Fire in 2018 saw Mike step up as a pillar of support. He opened his home to 24 people, providing warmth, food, and companionship in the aftermath of the disaster. His selfless act of kindness offered comfort to those facing uncertainty about their homes and futures.
Mike Eggleston’s impact on his family and community is immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed. A celebration of his life is scheduled for January 1, 2026, at 13:00 at the Durham Veterans Memorial Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Paradise Gem and Mineral Club at paradisegemmineral.com, a testament to his enduring legacy in the community he loved.
