Hackers Spark Surge in Prices for Star Wars: Racer Revenge
A recent announcement from a group of hackers claiming to have discovered a method to jailbreak the PlayStation 5 has caused a significant surge in the price of an obscure video game, Star Wars: Racer Revenge. This 2002 game, initially released for the PlayStation 2, has seen its prices skyrocket due to the alleged exploitation of its PlayStation 4 re-release, which was handled by Limited Run Games in 2019.
The hackers state that in order to execute their jailbreak, they require the PS4 version of Star Wars: Racer Revenge. This version originally retailed for $14.99 or $37.99 for a premium edition. The game allows players to engage in podracing after the events of Episode I – The Phantom Menace, featuring various alien races, each with unique podracing abilities. Despite its quirky mechanics, including a permadeath mode for rival racers, the game had not garnered significant interest, maintaining a modest 73 score on Metacritic.
Details surrounding the jailbreak process suggest that running the PS4 disc version of the game on a PS5 can enable hackers to inject code into the system via the game’s menus. According to the hackers, this technique is resistant to being patched, which raises concerns about potential piracy within the gaming community.
As rumors of this jailbreak spread, opportunistic resellers have taken to platforms like eBay, where listings for Star Wars: Racer Revenge have surged to prices of around $250 or more. Traditional retail outlets, including Amazon, are now sold out of the game, further driving demand. Some consumers are turning to imports from other regions, but these copies are also quickly selling at inflated prices due to tariffs.
The limited availability of Star Wars: Racer Revenge has sparked a wave of requests from fans urging Limited Run Games to consider a reprint. Nevertheless, the company is known for its policy of not restocking sold-out titles, leaving many enthusiasts frustrated. For those still interested in the game, it remains available for purchase through the PlayStation Store at a standard price, though it cannot be used for the rumored jailbreak exploits.
As the situation unfolds, it is clear that the intersection of technology and gaming continues to create ripples in the market, influencing both prices and consumer behavior in unexpected ways.
