Illumina, Inc. has launched a groundbreaking cloud-based research software platform called Illumina Connected Multiomics. Announced on January 6, 2026, this innovative tool is designed to facilitate the analysis and visualization of multiomic and multimodal biological data at scale. As the volume and complexity of multiomic datasets continue to increase, the need for intuitive tools that integrate various biological information has never been greater.

The Connected Multiomics platform aims to streamline the integration of data across different disciplines, including transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, and epigenetics. This comprehensive approach not only reduces time and costs but also simplifies the process for scientists, allowing them to shift their focus from technical challenges to biological insights.

Enhanced User Experience Through Advanced Features

The launch of Connected Multiomics follows a year of development guided by feedback from 40 early access users. At the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical School, researchers studying oncology utilized the platform to gain new insights into melanoma by analyzing proteomic data. Dr. Kasey Couts, co-director of the CU Center for Rare Melanomas, noted the software’s user-friendly nature, stating, “I’m not a programmer, but the software is incredibly user-friendly. I don’t need an extensive bioinformatics background to use it, which helps my team focus on the biological insights rather than bioinformatics challenges.”

According to Rami Mehio, senior vice president and general manager of BioInsight at Illumina, the platform represents a significant advancement in user experience across their software offerings. “We are putting the multiomic pieces together on a single platform that is approachable for biologists and powerful for bioinformaticians so they can focus on discovery, not infrastructure,” he explained.

The platform supports the aggregation of thousands of multiomic samples from both Illumina and third-party assays, delivering reproducible results and interactive visualizations. Utilizing industry-standard statistical methods alongside integrated DRAGEN secondary analysis, Connected Multiomics enhances the analytical workflow.

Artificial Intelligence Enhances Analysis Capabilities

A key feature of Connected Multiomics is its AI-enabled variant interpretation, utilizing tools such as PrimateAI and PromoterAI. These capabilities help to filter out background mutations and highlight the most biologically relevant signals early in the analysis process. Illumina plans to continue expanding these AI functionalities to further improve the platform.

The multimodal capabilities of Connected Multiomics allow for both single-cell and spatial analysis. The platform provides tools for differential expression, marker gene identification, and cell typing. In its spatial transcriptomics feature, users can overlay gene expression data onto tissue imagery, enriching the context for biological insights.

Illumina positions itself as a leader in the multiomic solutions sector, with its robust sequencing platforms ensuring unmatched quality and scale. For researchers and pharmaceutical innovators, these capabilities open new avenues for precision health discovery, driving breakthroughs in biology and drug development.

“Connected Multiomics is an accelerant—breaking down bioinformatic barriers to create a more complete picture of our biology,” Mehio added. The company is eager to see how customers leverage this platform to unlock deeper biological understanding through a scalable multiomic workflow.
