Hydro One Proposes $311 Million Welland Thorold Power Line
Hydro One Networks Inc. has filed an application with the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) seeking approval to construct a new double-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission line. This line will connect Abitibi Consolidated Junction in Thorold to Crowland Transformer Station in Welland. The project represents a significant investment of approximately $311 million aimed at enhancing the electricity infrastructure in the Niagara Region.
The proposed transmission line is expected to bolster capacity and improve the reliability of the electricity grid, with an anticipated completion date set for 2029. As part of the project, Hydro One will also expand the Crowland Transformer Station. This development is particularly crucial as Ontario is projected to face historic growth in electricity demand over the next 25 years, especially in the southwestern part of the province.
According to Sonny Karunakaran, Vice President of Strategic Projects and Partnerships at Hydro One, “Electricity is the foundation that will help connect and power new homes, businesses, and industries. Hydro One’s success is tied to Ontario’s success.” He emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure now to meet future energy needs. The project also includes opportunities for nearby First Nations to invest in a 50 percent equity stake in the transmission line component, following Hydro One’s industry-leading First Nation 50-50 Equity Partnership Model.
Filing an application under Section 92 of the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 is a necessary step for Ontario electricity transmitters to obtain approval for constructing or expanding electricity transmission systems. The application by Hydro One provides comprehensive details regarding the project’s timing, route, design, and cost.
Hydro One Limited, Ontario’s largest electricity transmission and distribution provider, serves approximately 1.5 million customers and holds assets worth $36.7 billion as of December 31, 2024. The company reported annual revenues of $8.5 billion for 2024 and employed over 10,100 individuals dedicated to maintaining a reliable electricity system.
In 2024, Hydro One made substantial investments, contributing $3.1 billion to its transmission and distribution networks and supporting local economies by purchasing $2.9 billion in goods and services. The company is committed to community investment, sustainability, and diversity initiatives, aiming to strengthen the regions it serves.
For more information about the Welland Thorold Power Line project, Hydro One has established a dedicated webpage detailing the initiative’s specifics. Additional details about the company’s operations, governance practices, and social responsibility efforts can be found on Hydro One’s official website.
This project marks an essential step in addressing Ontario’s growing electricity demands while fostering partnerships with local communities, particularly First Nations, to ensure sustainable development in the region.
