Elbit Systems Secures $210 Million Contract to Upgrade Israeli Tanks

Elbit Systems has announced a significant $210 million contract to upgrade the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Markava main battle tanks. This contract, revealed this week, comes as the country maintains a ceasefire on its northern and southern fronts with Gaza and Lebanon, respectively. The decision follows public criticism from reservists regarding the operational capabilities of various armored vehicles after the recent Iron Swords war.

The upgrade project spans six years, with a primary goal of renewing the electronic assemblies of the Merkava tanks to enhance their operational service life. Elbit aims to improve and modernize multiple onboard systems, including the integration of high-performance, lightweight, AI-enhanced electro-optical sights. These advanced systems will facilitate panoramic observation and enhance target detection, acquisition, and tracking capabilities.

Background on Merkava Tanks and Recent Developments

The Merkava tank series is currently in its fourth generation, with approximately 80% of its components produced in Israel. Until 2010, Israel had a policy against exporting the Merkava tanks, with the first and only export deal occurring in 2014 with a foreign country, which remains undisclosed. In 2023, negotiations were underway to sell retired Merkava Mark 2 and Mark 3 tanks to a European and a South American country, but these discussions halted following the events of the Iron Swords conflict.

Elbit’s announcement comes just one day after the company disclosed its financial results for the third quarter of the year, which showcased a record order backlog of $25.2 billion. The company reported substantial growth in its land sector, with sales reaching $594 million, marking a remarkable 41% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth was primarily driven by demand from European countries, totaling around $536 million.

For the quarter, Israel accounted for approximately one-third of Elbit’s total sales, generating about $642 million in revenue. The announcement of the tank upgrade contract coincides with a mysterious transaction valued at $2.3 billion that the company reported on November 17.
