Uber to Launch Autonomous Taxi Service in San Francisco by 2026

Uber announced on Wednesday that it will introduce autonomous taxi rides in the San Francisco Bay Area, marking the city as the first market for this service, set to launch in late 2026. The ride-hailing giant revealed that it is collaborating with Lucid, an electric vehicle manufacturer, and Nuro Inc., a self-driving technology company, to develop a specialized robotaxi. This vehicle will be based on the Lucid Gravity SUV and is exclusive to Uber.

In a statement, Uber confirmed that Lucid has recently delivered test vehicles to Nuro, with plans to deploy 100 test vehicles on the roads in the upcoming months. The company aims to scale its operations significantly, targeting the release of over 20,000 autonomous taxis in various locations within the next six years. These vehicles will be accessible to riders directly through the Uber app.

Collaborations and Future Plans

In addition to its partnership with Lucid and Nuro, Uber is also working with Nvidia and Stellantis to expedite the rollout of autonomous taxis. On Tuesday, Uber disclosed that Stellantis anticipates beginning production of at least 5,000 vehicles, equipped with Nvidia software for autonomous operations, in the United States by 2028.

Last week, Uber expanded its autonomous taxi service to Saudi Arabia through a collaboration with WeRide, a Chinese autonomous technology firm. While autonomous taxis are not a new concept, Uber’s entry into this space is noteworthy given its status as the world’s largest ride-hailing service, operating in over 15,000 cities across more than 70 countries.

Competitive Landscape

Uber’s announcement comes as its competitor, Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has been testing autonomous taxis for several years. Waymo currently operates its taxi services in cities including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin, with plans to expand into London next year. Additionally, Uber has partnered with Waymo on autonomous taxi initiatives in Austin, indicating a growing collaborative effort within the industry.
