Mitch Wood Hits First Home Run, Showcases Perseverance in Iowa

Mitch Wood celebrated a significant milestone in his baseball career on March 15, 2024, when he hit his first home run as a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes. This moment, marked by a commanding swing and a powerful drive down the left field line, not only contributed to Iowa’s 5-0 lead over Loras College but also symbolized Wood’s journey of perseverance and growth.

As the designated hitter stepped up to the plate during the fifth inning, the atmosphere was electric, reminiscent of a WWE spectacle. With a 2-1 count and two runners on base, Wood connected with a pitch from Duhawk pitcher Andrew Krause, sending the ball soaring high above the foul post. Reflecting on the achievement, he remarked, “I’ve hit a few [home runs] in other places, in the fall and scrimmages. It’s good to finally get that first one off the board.”

Wood’s journey to this moment has been anything but straightforward. Initially, he joined Iowa baseball with high expectations, hoping to make an immediate impact. However, his freshman year in 2021-22 was fraught with challenges that prompted him to seek opportunities elsewhere. The decision to transfer to Yavapai College in Arizona proved pivotal. During his time there, he recorded 54 hits, including five home runs and 39 runs batted in (RBI), achieving a .323 batting average over 49 games.

After a successful season at Yavapai, Wood moved to Northern Kentucky, where he earned Second Team All-Horizon League honors with 13 home runs and 44 RBI across 54 games. With newfound confidence and experience, he reached out to Iowa baseball head coach Rick Heller ahead of the 2024-25 season, expressing his desire to return. Heller welcomed him back, recognizing the improvements Wood had made as both a player and teammate.

“I was interested to see kind of what the change would be,” Wood stated. His return to Iowa has seen him evolve into a more mature player, focused on teamwork and contributing positively to the squad. In the 2023-24 season, he played 29 games, starting five, and achieved a .276 batting average, with three home runs and six RBI in just 29 at-bats.

This season, Wood has continued to build on his progress, with increased plate appearances already reaching 18 at-bats through the first 12 games. His impressive .444 batting average highlights his eight hits and 11 RBI, a testament to his hard work and dedication. A key factor in his revamped success has been a shift in mindset; Wood now approaches the game with greater calmness and joy, alleviating the pressure he felt in his earlier years.

“My freshman year, I came here and I was making it more than just a game,” Wood explained. “We’re all living out our dreams here, and it’s just might as well have as much fun as you can.” His first home run not only marks a personal achievement but encapsulates the resilience and determination that have characterized his journey in college baseball.
