Urgent: Repatriation Flights for Stranded Hungarians Begin Now
UPDATE: The first repatriation flight to rescue stranded Hungarian citizens from the Middle East has just taken off for Jordan, confirmed Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in a video statement released on October 18, 2023. This urgent mission comes as thousands remain trapped due to escalating conflicts in the region.
This initial flight is set to bring home 87 individuals, including 83 Hungarians, as well as citizens from Romania, Slovakia, and Colombia. Szijjártó noted that these passengers are primarily those who were in Israel, where airspace closures have left many unable to leave.
In an effort to facilitate safe returns, Szijjártó revealed that a group of 51 pilgrims was assisted in crossing into Jordan by land due to the airspace restrictions. “Those we assisted into Jordan will be flown home on Wednesday and Thursday with special flights from Amman,” he stated.
The urgency continues as further repatriation flights are scheduled. A second flight will depart on Thursday to bring more Hungarians from Amman, while a flight from Sharm El-Sheikh is planned for Friday. These developments are critical as individuals stranded in Israel can only exit by traveling through Jordan or Egypt.
Szijjártó emphasized the coordination between Hungary and regional authorities, stating, “I remain in constant contact with my Arab counterparts to assist as many Hungarians as possible.” He confirmed that over 4,000 Hungarians are still stranded in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, facing barriers due to ongoing conflicts affecting air travel.
Despite the dire circumstances, support is evident. Szijjártó expressed confidence in the UAE and Jordan’s cooperation, highlighting their commitment to ensuring the safety of stranded Hungarians. “Unfortunately, closed airspaces continue to hinder returns,” he reiterated, adding that embassies remain operational and consular departments are fully engaged.
Officials are urging those with family and friends in the region to stay updated through official channels as the situation develops. The Hungarian government is making every effort to expedite repatriation processes.
With airspace conditions changing rapidly, citizens are advised to remain vigilant. As Szijjártó stated, “As soon as airspace becomes accessible, we will assist everyone in returning home as quickly as possible.”
