Marin Catholic Wildcats Fall to King’s Academy in NorCal Opener

UPDATE: Marin Catholic’s dream season ended abruptly last night as the No. 8 Wildcats were eliminated by No. 9 King’s Academy, 85-73, in the opening round of the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships. The game, held in Kentfield, marked a heartbreaking conclusion to a remarkable campaign for the Wildcats.

In a stunning twist, Marin Catholic, who finished the season with a record of 24-5, had been riding high after securing the MCAL title but faced a tough challenge from the defending D-III NorCal champions. Coach Kevin Vasquez emphasized that despite the loss, the team should hold their heads high. “What an incredible season. Don’t let one game take away from what we did. It was truly a magical season,” he stated after the game.

Marin Catholic took an early lead, going into halftime ahead 40-37, thanks to the sharp shooting of Oliver Myers, who netted 11 points in the first half. However, the tides turned when the Knights rallied in the second half, showcasing their elite skills. “They were definitely the most skilled team we played all season,” remarked senior captain Joe Hammond.

The Wildcats briefly regained the lead at 50-47 during the third quarter, but King’s Academy responded fiercely, with Adrian Barnett leading the Knights with 20 points and nine rebounds. The Wildcats were unable to sustain the momentum, and after tying the game at 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, they fell behind as King’s Academy capitalized on missed shots and rebounds.

Despite the disappointment, Vasquez noted the emotional toll on his players, saying, “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room. But when they look back on the season without emotion, they are going to realize what they accomplished.” The Wildcats not only captured the MCAL title but also made it to the NorCal D-I playoffs after a strong showing in the North Coast Section open division.
