Rubin Observatory Launches Alert System with 800,000 Notifications

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has officially launched its automated alert system, which has already made a significant impact by sending out approximately 800,000 alerts on its inaugural night. This system, which went live publicly on February 24, 2024, aims to assist astronomers in monitoring various celestial events, including asteroids, supernovas, and black holes.

The observatory, located in Chile, released its first images from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) camera in June 2023. Since then, both researchers and amateur stargazers have eagerly anticipated the full functionality of this alert system. Each night, the LSST camera captures around 1,000 images, comparing them against a reference taken when the telescope first became operational. This process allows for the quick identification of differences, which are flagged automatically.
