Ravens GM Confident in Lamar Jackson’s Contract Extension Talks
The Baltimore Ravens are under pressure to finalize a contract extension with their franchise quarterback, Lamar Jackson. With two years remaining on his current deal, discussions surrounding Jackson’s future intensified during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on February 24, 2026. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta expressed confidence in reaching a new agreement, though he did not specify a timetable for the negotiations.
DeCosta indicated that the Ravens aim to secure a new contract for Jackson, potentially before the start of the official league year on March 11, 2026. He also mentioned that he has spoken with Jackson about the importance of finalizing an extension prior to the 2025 season. The urgency is heightened by the desire to avoid a repeat of the contentious contract discussions that marked Jackson’s previous negotiations.
Currently, Jackson is in the midst of a five-year, $260 million contract signed in May 2023. As it stands, he is projected to account for $74.5 million against the salary cap in the 2026 and 2027 seasons. This figure poses challenges for the Ravens in terms of salary cap flexibility, particularly as they aim to improve their roster.
At present, the Ravens have approximately $22 million in available cap space, placing them at 15th among NFL teams, according to Spotrac. The situation is further complicated by the impending free agency of tight end Isaiah Likely, a player Jackson has expressed a desire for the team to retain.
As the Ravens move forward, the spotlight on Jackson has intensified following the departure of long-time head coach John Harbaugh, who has since taken a position with the Giants. With a new contract on the horizon, Jackson faces significant expectations to elevate the team’s performance.
Despite being a two-time NFL MVP and a four-time Pro Bowler, questions linger regarding Jackson’s durability and the number of elite seasons remaining in his career. The 2025 season was particularly challenging, as Jackson missed four games due to injury, limiting him to a total of 2,549 yards passing, 349 yards rushing, and 23 touchdowns (21 passing, two rushing) against 14 turnovers (seven interceptions, seven fumbles). The Ravens finished with a 6-7 record during his starts.
Historically, Jackson’s postseason performance has drawn scrutiny, with a record of 3-5 in playoff games, including seven interceptions and seven fumbles across eight appearances. The upcoming contract negotiations will not only impact his financial future but also play a crucial role in shaping his legacy with the Ravens, as postseason success remains a key measure of his career achievements.
