MTA Deploys De-Icer Trains Amid Winter Storm Challenges
UPDATE: As New York City braces for severe winter weather, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirms the deployment of specialized de-icer trains to combat snow and ice on the tracks. This urgent measure is crucial for maintaining transit service amid ongoing winter storms affecting the region.
MTA officials report that keeping the city’s extensive rail network clear is a monumental task. Elian S. from Bensonhurst inquired about the operation of these de-icer trains, prompting a detailed response from Erika Schaub, Senior Director of Emergency Management and Preparedness. The MTA has modified retired subway cars into de-icing trains equipped with tanks to spray de-icing fluid on the vital third rail. Additionally, jet blowers—repurposed engines from jets and helicopters—are deployed to blast snow and ice off outdoor tracks, generating an impressive 2,500 pounds of thrust to clear heavy snow and slush.
In another pressing concern, Vito S. from Tompkinsville highlighted the difficulties many commuters faced as bus stops remained unshoveled after the recent storm. Frank Farrell, Executive Vice President of the New York City Transit Department of Buses, emphasized that snow removal is a coordinated effort. The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is responsible for stops without bus shelters, while a contractor, JCDecaux, manages snow removal at bus shelters.
Commuters are also raising concerns about service reliability. Sheryl W. from Hamilton Heights reported that the status board at the W 145 St-St Nicholas Av station has been malfunctioning for months. Shanifah Rieara, MTA Chief Customer Officer, stated that the MTA is working with an external partner, Outfront, to address power issues affecting the digital screens. New Yorkers can report issues with digital signs through the MTA app, website, or by calling 511.
With winter weather forecasted to continue, the MTA urges commuters to stay informed about service updates and potential disruptions. As transit officials work tirelessly to ensure safety and accessibility, New Yorkers are encouraged to reach out with their questions and concerns.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates as the situation develops.
