Urgent Winter Storm Warnings: Heavy Snow, 60 MPH Winds Hit Southeast
UPDATE: Winter storm warnings are now in effect for four southern states along the East Coast as severe weather unleashes heavy snow and powerful winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirms that affected areas could see up to 4 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 60 mph, creating conditions that may lead to brief blizzards.
ALERT: The states under these urgent winter storm warnings include North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The NWS strongly advises residents to keep essential supplies like flashlights, non-perishable food, and water in their vehicles in case of emergencies during travel.
In North Carolina, mountain areas are expected to receive approximately 1 inch of snow, with black ice and winds gusting up to 55 mph expected until Sunday morning. The eastern Piedmont, Sandhills, and Coastal Plain could see up to 2 inches of snow along with winds at 35 mph until Sunday afternoon.
The NWS urges travelers to consider avoiding all unnecessary travel in Duplin, Onslow, Jones, Craven, Pamlico, and western Carteret Counties, where snowfall may reach between 2 and 4 inches and winds could create “whiteout conditions.” Emergency officials warn that travel could become “potentially life-threatening.”
In South Carolina, upstate regions are bracing for light snowfall and slick roads, particularly along the Interstate 77 corridor. Counties including Allendale, Coastal Colleton, Hampton, and Beaufort could see hazardous conditions until Sunday afternoon, with the potential for up to 4 inches of snow in parts of central South Carolina.
As for Georgia, areas in the northeast are likely to experience a light dusting of snow, black ice, and gusty winds, which will contribute to poor visibility. Counties such as Jenkins, Screven, Bulloch, and Candler could receive up to 3 inches of snow by Sunday morning, making roads particularly dangerous.
In Virginia, residents can expect up to 2 inches of snow and winds reaching 45 mph in parts of the south central and southwest regions until Sunday morning. Conditions in the southeast could worsen, with wind gusts of up to 55 mph lasting until Sunday evening.
The NWS emphasizes the need for extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary, advising residents to stay informed about weather updates. As this storm develops, officials will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide timely updates.
Stay tuned for further developments as this winter storm progresses across the Southeast.
