UPDATE: Andytown Coffee Roasters, a beloved coffee chain in San Francisco, has just announced a 7.5% price increase on all drinks due to rising costs impacting the industry. Co-owners Lauren Crabbe and Michael McCrory are taking the extraordinary step of posting flyers at all nine locations to explain this decision directly to customers.

This price hike comes amid a perfect storm of challenges, including soaring coffee prices, extreme weather conditions disrupting supply chains, and skyrocketing labor costs. According to Crabbe, the cumulative effect of these pressures has made it impossible to keep prices stable any longer.

“Raising prices is the last thing any small-business owner wants to do,” Crabbe stated. “But we could no longer hold that line.” The duo emphasizes transparency, wanting their customers to understand the broader economic forces at play, rather than quietly adjusting prices without explanation.

The coffee industry faces unprecedented challenges as the era of cheap coffee appears to be coming to an end. Customers accustomed to paying less for their daily brew are now facing a reality where even basic items like a cup of coffee are significantly more expensive. Crabbe notes that despite some tariffs on coffee being rolled back, the repercussions are still being felt throughout the supply chain, affecting everything from packaging to milk.

Extreme weather events, including severe monsoons in Asia and droughts in Brazil, have also severely impacted coffee production. Coupled with increasing global demand for high-quality coffee, especially from emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East, businesses are struggling to absorb costs.

“We’re seeing sustained increases, not just temporary spikes,” Crabbe explained. “Businesses that waited too long to raise prices are now in a very tough position.”

The decision to raise prices was not taken lightly for Crabbe and McCrory. Their commitment to retaining health insurance for full-time employees has added to financial strain, with premiums rising over 20% this year. “Between raising prices or eliminating health insurance, that’s not a choice at all. I will always choose to raise prices,” Crabbe affirmed.

As Andytown prepares to open a new location on Kearny Street, in a space previously occupied by a Starbucks, they continue to embody a spirit of resilience and community engagement. The coffee shop, which started just blocks away from their home in the Outer Sunset, is deeply rooted in San Francisco’s culture and is eager to contribute positively to the downtown area.
