Pennsylvania Honors 11 Family Farms at 2026 Farm Show
At the 2026 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg, state officials celebrated the enduring legacy of family farms by honoring 11 properties that have stood the test of time. On January 13, 2026, Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding awarded designations to seven Centennial farms, which have been in the same family for at least 100 years, and four Bicentennial farms, tracing their lineage back two centuries, including one that dates to the Revolutionary War.
This recognition is part of a longstanding initiative by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to highlight the resilience of the state’s agricultural sector. Since the launch of the Century Farm program in 1977 and the Bicentennial Farm program in 2004, Pennsylvania has recognized a total of 2,378 farms under these categories, along with two tricentennial farms.
Significance of the Honored Farms
“These farms tell a powerful story of families who have worked the same land for generations,” stated Davis during the ceremony. He emphasized that the honored farms are a testament to the importance of agriculture in Pennsylvania’s identity and future. Redding added that these families represent more than just longevity; they are seen as stewards of the land and vital contributors to the state’s food system, preserving both livelihoods and rural traditions.
The farms being celebrated span several counties, including Berks, Butler, Clearfield, Fayette, Indiana, Mercer, Perry, and Wayne. Among them is a Fayette County property purchased in 1769, which has been maintained by the same family since its inception, with original structures still in use today.
Pennsylvania’s Agricultural Landscape
Pennsylvania leads the nation in preserved farmland, having safeguarded over 6,600 farms and approximately 661,000 acres since the creation of the Farmland Preservation Program in 1988. This initiative continues to be a priority for Governor Josh Shapiro, who has identified agriculture as a key component of the state’s ten-year economic development strategy.
According to state figures, nearly 49,000 farms contribute approximately $132.5 billion annually to Pennsylvania’s economy, supporting close to 600,000 jobs. The farm show runs until January 14, 2026, and serves as the commencement of Pennsylvania’s America250PA commemorations, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
For the families honored at the event, the recognition signifies more than historical importance; their farms continue to be active institutions shaping the future of the Commonwealth.
