Texas Tech Lady Raiders Triumph Over West Virginia 71-66
The No. 17 Texas Tech Lady Raiders secured a thrilling 71-66 victory against West Virginia on January 17, 2024, at Hope Coliseum. This win not only solidified their position atop the Big 12 standings but also marked a significant milestone, being their first victory in Morgantown since January 14, 2015.
Senior guard Bailey Maupin led the charge with a standout performance, scoring a season-high 27 points. Her fourth-quarter explosion was pivotal, as she netted 13 points in the final frame alone. After trailing by six points entering the quarter, Maupin’s clutch three-pointer ignited a decisive 12-5 run that propelled Texas Tech to victory.
Maupin’s shooting was impressive, connecting on 53.3 percent of her attempts, including a career-high four three-pointers. In addition to her scoring, she contributed significantly with four rebounds, three assists, and a crucial steal in the closing moments of the game.
With this win, Texas Tech improved to a perfect 17-0 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 competition. This marks the best start in program history, as well as the first time since the 2004-05 season that the Lady Raiders have opened their conference play with four consecutive victories.
Key Contributions and Team Performance
Senior Snudda Collins added 19 points, marking her 15th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Jalynn Bristow, despite facing foul trouble, anchored the rebounding effort with nine boards and recorded a career-high three assists. Denae Fritz also made her mark with nine points and eight rebounds, hitting three three-pointers for the second consecutive game.
The game featured a competitive back-and-forth dynamic, with 15 lead changes and five ties. Texas Tech shot 44.4 percent from the field and an efficient 47.1 percent from beyond the arc. Defensively, they held West Virginia to 38.7 percent shooting, while limiting the Mountaineers to just 28.6 percent from three-point range.
Despite committing 20 turnovers, which resulted in 19 points for West Virginia, Texas Tech showcased resilience with critical defensive stops late in the game. Jordan Harrison was the leading scorer for West Virginia, contributing 22 points, while Carter McCray added 15.
