Texas Women’s Basketball Faces SEC Challenge; Auburn Up Next
UPDATE: The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, are gearing up for an intense showdown against the Auburn Tigers on January 4, 2024, as they navigate the challenges of the SEC. With a flawless record of 17-0, Texas is set to prove its mettle in a league known for its fierce competition.
Head coach Vic Schaefer has often emphasized the toughness of the SEC, referring to it as the WNBA’s “Triple-A.” Last season, Texas split the regular-season championship with South Carolina and witnessed a record-setting ten teams from the SEC make it to the NCAA Tournament, with co-champions reaching the Final Four. As they dive into the thick of the SEC schedule, the Longhorns are determined to maintain their momentum.
This season, the SEC boasts an unprecedented record, with five teams in the top seven of the Associated Press poll for the first time in its history. Joining Texas in the rankings are South Carolina (No. 3), Oklahoma (No. 5), Kentucky (No. 6), Vanderbilt (No. 7), LSU (No. 12), Ole Miss (No. 18), and Tennessee (No. 20). As per the AP, this highlights the SEC’s dominance in college women’s basketball.
“You’re going to have to come through the SEC to win a national championship,” said Shea Ralph, Vanderbilt’s coach.
As Texas prepares to face Auburn, a team that has struggled in SEC play with a record of 0-2, Schaefer is not underestimating the challenge. Auburn, led by new coach Larry Vickers, is looking to turn around its season after a disappointing previous year. Schaefer noted, “They’ve won 11 games for a reason. I think they’re improved. I think they play really hard.” The Longhorns cannot afford to overlook Auburn’s potential, especially in a league where every game counts.
Texas’s recent games have underscored the brutal nature of the SEC. The Longhorns narrowly escaped with a three-point victory against Ole Miss after nearly squandering a 15-point lead. With a record of 17-1 in league games since joining the SEC, Texas is determined to prove they belong at the top.
As they eye championship aspirations, the Longhorns will face tough tests in the coming weeks, including away games against South Carolina and LSU. Schaefer has made it clear that readiness and toughness are non-negotiable in this league. “If we’re not ready, we won’t get beat, we’ll get embarrassed,” he stated.
Texas senior guard Ashton Judd, who brings valuable SEC experience from her time at Missouri, echoed Schaefer’s sentiments. “It can be anybody’s game at any given night,” Judd explained, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of SEC matchups.
With the stakes higher than ever, fans are urged to tune in as Texas aims to extend its perfect record against an Auburn team eager to turn its season around. The game kicks off at the Moody Center, marking another critical moment in the SEC battle for supremacy in women’s college basketball.
