Berkly Catton Nets Two Goals in Kraken’s Victory Over Bruins

Berkly Catton, the Seattle Kraken‘s first-round pick from the 2024 NHL Draft, scored his first two career goals in a thrilling 7-4 victory against the Boston Bruins on March 5, 2024. After a lengthy wait of 28 games without finding the net, Catton quickly followed his breakthrough goal with a second, showcasing his potential as a rising star in the league.

The 19-year-old forward’s first goal came in an unexpected manner during a three-on-two play just 2:48 into the second period. Receiving a pass from teammate Jared McCann, Catton launched a one-timer from a challenging angle that slipped through the pads of Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman. “I didn’t even know it went in, to be honest,” Catton remarked. “I thought it hit the post.” The moment was marked by a goal horn and a euphoric celebration from Catton, who raised his arms in relief as McCann joined him in celebration along the boards.

“It’s the best; I said, ‘Finally,’” McCann, an 11-year veteran, said. “He’s been working really hard, and we were due.” This sentiment reflects the encouragement Catton has received from his teammates throughout his early NHL career. Selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft, Catton previously made his mark in the Western Hockey League with the Spokane Chiefs.

Catton’s scoring drought had persisted even after logging his first NHL point with an assist during his debut on October 20, 2024. He added two more assists in subsequent games, but the elusive goal remained out of reach. “Obviously I thought about it all the time, but I wouldn’t say it was really impacting me too much,” he explained. “But it’s just a relief more than anything to get it out of the way.”

With one goal behind him, Catton wasted no time in adding to his tally. Just 14 minutes into the third period, he tallied his second goal with a skillful backhand shot over Swayman’s glove, set up by a feed from Freddy Gaudreau.

“It’s awesome to see him score,” said Lane Lambert, head coach of the Kraken. “I’ve said a few times prior to now that once he scores, I think he’ll score a few.” Lambert’s confidence in Catton’s abilities may prove to be well-founded, as the young player continues to develop and gain confidence on the ice.
