In a thrilling encounter marked by controversy and drama, the Texas A&M Aggies secured a narrow 90-88 victory over the Auburn Tigers in an SEC basketball showdown on March 7, 2024. The game culminated in a chaotic final few seconds that included a controversial call on a missed free throw and a last-second shot that was ultimately ruled invalid after video review.

With just two seconds remaining, Texas A&M led by two points when guard Pop Isaacs stepped to the free-throw line. After missing the first shot, Auburn called a timeout, leading to an intentional miss that barely grazed the rim. Confusion ensued as officials mistakenly halted play. In the ensuing inbound pass, Auburn’s KeyShawn Murphy sank a three-pointer that momentarily sparked celebration among the home crowd. However, video evidence indicated that the shot was released just after the game clock expired, prompting officials to overturn the basket.

“It’s inexcusable for that to happen here,” said Texas A&M head coach Bucky McMillan. “That game should have been over if there wasn’t a clock malfunction. The referees made the right call.” This victory not only marked a significant win for the Aggies but also represented a milestone for McMillan in his early coaching career.

Isaacs led Texas A&M with a commanding performance, scoring a team-high 21 points, while teammates Jacari Lane, Rashaun Agee, and Rubén Dominguez contributed 17, 14, and 14 points, respectively. The Aggies showcased their resilience by overcoming a 16-point deficit in the first half and maintaining control late in the game, despite a late push from Auburn.

Auburn’s Keyshawn Hall was a standout performer, scoring 32 points, with half of those coming in the first half, allowing the Tigers to secure a 47-37 lead at halftime. However, the second half saw Texas A&M regain their momentum, demonstrating a relentless approach that has become synonymous with McMillan’s coaching style.

“That was a resilient second half by our guys,” McMillan remarked. “We are who we are, and we’re looking like we’re supposed to look. Attacking basketball, being relentless the whole game.”

The Aggies executed a rapid 11-0 run in just 28 seconds, showcasing their effective defense and lethal three-point shooting. This surge allowed Texas A&M to close the gap and ultimately take the lead, emphasizing their determination and grit on the court.

As the game progressed, Texas A&M stretched their lead to 12 points with 3:51 remaining. Despite the Tigers’ late-game rally, including a three-pointer from Dominguez that pushed the lead to 88-80, Texas A&M’s experience and composure under pressure proved decisive. Isaacs converted two of four free throws in the final moments, including the intentional miss that preceded the chaotic finish.

As the Aggies look forward to their next challenge, they can take pride in their ability to secure a high-stakes victory in a hostile environment. “It’s going to be electric when we get back home,” McMillan said, hinting at the excitement building for their next game at Reed Arena.

Meanwhile, the Troubadour Festival is set to return to Bryan-College Station on March 28, 2024, featuring the best BBQ joints in Texas and live music, further adding to the vibrant local culture surrounding Texas A&M athletics.
