The year 2025 marked a significant milestone in startup financing, particularly within the artificial intelligence sector. A total of 15 companies successfully raised venture funding rounds exceeding $2 billion, accumulating over $100 billion collectively. This surge in investment predominantly favored generative AI firms, underscoring a growing confidence in the sector’s potential.

Outstanding Funding Achievements

Leading the pack was OpenAI, which attracted an unprecedented $40 billion from SoftBank on March 31. This investment represents the largest venture financing ever recorded. The deal involves SoftBank orchestrating a syndicate of co-investors to contribute $10 billion, while SoftBank will fund the remaining $30 billion, including $10 billion through debt arrangements.

Following OpenAI, Scale AI, based in San Francisco, raised $14.3 billion from Meta in June, achieving a valuation of $29 billion. This funding will facilitate Scale AI’s mission to provide training data and model evaluation for various AI applications, with founder Alexandr Wang transitioning to work within Meta on AI initiatives.

In September, Anthropic secured a remarkable $13 billion in its Series F financing, reaching a valuation of $183 billion. The funding round, led by Iconiq Capital, along with Fidelity and Lightspeed Venture Partners, emphasizes the continued investor interest in AI capabilities.

Noteworthy is the emergence of Project Prometheus, which launched with an initial funding of $6.2 billion in November. The startup aims to apply AI technology to physical tasks and is co-led by Jeff Bezos and Vik Bajaj, a physicist with extensive experience in biotechnology.

The summer of 2025 proved fruitful for xAI, the generative AI company founded by Elon Musk, which raised $5.3 billion in equity funding. Since its inception just two and a half years prior, xAI has attracted over $22 billion in total financing.

Additional Noteworthy Funding Rounds

In December, Databricks announced it had raised over $4 billion in a Series L financing round, achieving a valuation of $134 billion. The company reported a revenue run-rate exceeding $4.8 billion, reflecting a growth of more than 55% year over year.

Anthropic also made headlines earlier in March by raising an additional $3.5 billion, bringing its valuation to $61.5 billion. This funding round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Meanwhile, Anduril Industries, a defense technology firm based in Costa Mesa, California, raised $2.5 billion in a Series G round in June, more than doubling its valuation to $30.5 billion.

Several other companies also secured significant rounds: Anysphere raised $2.3 billion in November to reach a valuation of $29.3 billion, while Polymarket, Reflection AI, Safe Superintelligence, and Thinking Machines Lab each raised $2 billion in funding.

In addition, Binance, the Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange, received a $2 billion investment from the Abu Dhabi-based investment firm MGX in March. Similarly, Mistral AI garnered $2 billion in a September funding round led by Netherlands-based chipmaker ASML, achieving a valuation of $13.2 billion.

This impressive aggregation of capital highlights a robust interest in AI and technology startups, reflecting investors’ unwavering belief in the transformative potential of these innovations. As the year progresses, the focus will likely remain on how these investments translate into advancements within the industry.
