Beloved Matriarch Sally Ann Sprout Mallard Passes Away at 89

Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a cherished matriarch and community member, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at the age of 89. Surrounded by her devoted husband, Clayton Mallard, and her daughters Jennifer and Gwendolyn, Sally’s legacy of love and kindness leaves a profound impact on those who knew her.

Born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout, Sally was raised in Torrance, California. She attended local schools, where she met Clayton in the 10th grade at Torrance High School. After two years at Whittier College, the couple married on August 5, 1956, embarking on a remarkable journey together that lasted nearly seven decades.

Sally and Clayton’s life together was marked by warmth and hospitality. They created a nurturing home for their family, which expanded to include four daughters: Rebecca Mallard, Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian, and Cynthia Swift. Sally excelled in various domestic skills, from sewing and cooking to hosting gatherings that made everyone feel welcome. Her ability to connect with people was evident in her vibrant social life, which included active participation in community events and church activities.

Throughout their marriage, the couple moved several times due to Clayton’s career, living in locations such as Atlanta, Georgia, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before eventually settling in Fallbrook, California, in 2002. During this time, they maintained strong ties with old friends while also forging new connections. A significant moment for their Torrance High School class was the 60th reunion, held at their home on Vista del Lago in Fallbrook.

Sally’s passions extended beyond family and hospitality. She was an avid bridge player who taught the game in Iowa and led a neighborhood group in Tustin. Even after moving to Fallbrook, she continued to play at the local Senior Center, showcasing her ongoing commitment to social engagement and community involvement.

In her later years, Sally took up tennis, further exemplifying her active lifestyle. Her friendships with fellow tennis enthusiasts, including Dorothy Roth, added joy to her retirement years. Sally cherished the milestones of her life, including the weddings of her daughters and the birth of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary with a memorable gathering, where they were joined by Leonora Costales-Cabesa, a former AFS student who had lived with them from 1976 to 1977 and remained close to Sally’s heart. This event highlighted Sally’s love for family and the importance she placed on relationships.

Sally is survived by her sisters Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson, along with her husband, Clayton, and her daughters. She also leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Spencer, Anastasia, Taylor, and many others, as well as a network of nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.

A memorial service is scheduled for January 3, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Sally’s life and the love she shared with everyone around her. Her vibrant spirit and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
