Urgent: Major Lake-Effect Snowstorm Set to Hit New York on Jan 1
UPDATE: A massive lake-effect snowstorm is rapidly approaching New York, with forecasts predicting some areas could see over 12 inches of snow on New Year’s Day. Regions in western New York, particularly downwind from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, are bracing for significant snowfall as strong northwesterly winds continue to funnel frigid air into the area.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, areas south of Buffalo, including Syracuse and the Tug Hill Plateau, may experience isolated accumulations ranging from 12 to 18 inches. Eastern Lake Michigan and various parts of northwestern Pennsylvania are also expected to receive between 3 to 5 inches of snow. The storm poses risks of reduced visibility and powerful wind gusts up to 70 mph along the lakeshores, potentially leading to coastal flooding.
Weather alerts are currently in effect across key locations, including Syracuse, Buffalo, and Erie, Pennsylvania, with warnings remaining active until Friday morning. As a trough in the jet stream pushes southward, it allows cold air to collide with the warmer Great Lakes, creating ideal conditions for heavy snowfall.
The storm’s intensity is expected to escalate as milder disturbances within the jet stream deliver additional moisture, intensifying snowfall throughout the Great Lakes into the week’s end. By the morning of January 2, conditions will remain perilous, impacting travel from Syracuse to Buffalo and into Pennsylvania.
From New Year’s Eve through early New Year’s Day, a clipper system moving south from Canada may further amplify snow rates, particularly in western New York. This system could also spread lighter snow flurries as far as New York City and Boston, creating significant travel disruptions for millions heading home after the holidays.
With travel expected to peak during this time, authorities warn of hazardous driving conditions. Residents are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for possible delays and cancellations.
The FOX Weather team is closely monitoring the situation, with live reports from affected areas such as Syracuse, where snow totals could reach up to three feet. Stay tuned for updates as this developing storm unfolds.
