Google Allows Users to Change Gmail Addresses, Keeping Data Intact
UPDATE: Google has officially announced a game-changing feature for Gmail users: the ability to swap out old email addresses without losing any data. This highly anticipated update allows users to change their existing @gmail.com addresses, ensuring that all saved information—including emails, messages, and photos—remains intact.
The rollout is currently underway, with users beginning to see this option in their accounts. Previously, many Gmail holders faced embarrassment due to email addresses created in their teenage years. Now, they can transition to more suitable usernames while retaining access to their previous accounts. Old email addresses will stay active, allowing users to receive emails sent to both the new and old addresses.
Social media is buzzing with excitement over this announcement. One user on X exclaimed, “Feature needed: 2005. Feature arriving: 2025. Gap: two decades of suffering.” Another added humorously, “So all those years of ‘cool’ usernames and cringe emails can be erased… shame it can’t delete the memories associated with them.” This sentiment resonates especially with members of the transgender community and others who have changed their names, offering them a chance to distance themselves from their past identities.
While Gmail users celebrate this update, it’s noteworthy that competing services like Microsoft Outlook have offered similar features for some time, allowing users to create “aliases” easily. Google’s new option is currently limited to accounts ending in @gmail.com, and any new address must also adhere to this format.
However, users should act swiftly: once they change their email address, they cannot register another email address for the same account for the next 12 months. To check if this feature is available, users can visit their Gmail account settings. By clicking on “Manage Your Google Account,” then under “Personal Info,” they can see if the option to change their email address is available for their region.
This update is a significant step forward in user experience, addressing long-standing frustrations and making the platform more user-friendly. Stay tuned for further updates as the rollout continues globally.
