Italian Police Arrest 9 for Allegedly Funding Hamas with $8.2M
UPDATE: Italian authorities have arrested nine individuals accused of raising over $8.2 million to fund Hamas, just months after the group’s deadly attack on Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. The arrests, conducted this morning by Italy’s State Police and the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police), mark a significant crackdown on suspected terrorist financing within the country.
The suspects are believed to have operated a complex fundraising network based in Genoa with connections to Milan. Authorities report that funds were solicited under the guise of humanitarian aid for the civilian population of Gaza. However, investigations revealed that a staggering 71% of the donations were diverted to support Hamas’ military operations and to aid the families of suicide bombers or those imprisoned for terrorism.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the arrests, emphasizing their importance in addressing threats to national security. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he declared, “The veil has been torn away on behaviors and activities that, behind the facade of initiatives to benefit the Palestinian population, concealed support for and participation in organizations with actual terrorist aims of an Islamist nature.”
Central to the investigation is Mohammad Hannoun, the president of the Palestinian Association in Italy, who has denied any wrongdoing. His role, along with that of the other defendants, involved laundering money through three charities to obscure the true destination of the funds.
This urgent operation comes in the wake of heightened security concerns following the conflict in Gaza. Italy’s counter-terrorism and financial police initiated the investigation as a direct response to the actions of Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the region.
As the situation develops, officials continue to stress the potential dangers posed by such fundraising activities. The Italian government has vowed to maintain vigilance against any threats linked to terrorism.
Authorities urge the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities related to fundraising for foreign terrorist organizations. This operation underscores the global challenge of combating terrorism financing and highlights the ongoing impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict on international security measures.
