Beloved Navy Veteran and Engineer Jim Sheehy Passes Away at 84
James (Jim) Gordon Sheehy, a cherished husband, father, and Navy veteran, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84 in Redondo Beach, California. His life was marked by a commitment to service, family, and exploration, leaving a profound legacy that touched many.
A Life of Service and Accomplishment
Born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, Jim was the son of James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy. He was preceded in death by siblings Terry, Paul, Annine, Brian, Susan, and Burchard. Jim is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis; his children, James and Shannon; his grandson, Matthew; and his brother, Dennis.
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, achieving the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His tenure included service aboard several ships, including the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. His military experience instilled a lifelong sense of discipline and pride in serving his country.
Following his military service, Jim pursued a successful career as an aerospace engineer. His work contributed to important projects in space exploration and national defense at reputable organizations such as Burroughs Corporation, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. Notably, he played a significant role in the development of the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs.
Commitment to Community and Family
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim dedicated sixteen years to serving as an active member of Rotary International, embracing its commitment to community service. His personal journey included a significant commitment to sobriety, as he celebrated 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025 through his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Jim’s passion for travel was unparalleled. Together with his wife Alexis, he explored all seven continents, visiting 103 countries and over 500 cities. His adventurous spirit was evident as he navigated diverse cultures and landscapes, always eager to learn and experience new things.
In facing challenges, Jim demonstrated remarkable resilience. After developing a serious back condition in 2012, he adapted by using a walker, ensuring that he remained active and engaged in life. In a testament to his determination, he completed the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon with a “sport walker,” going on to finish another five marathons in a similar fashion.
Jim Sheehy’s legacy will be remembered for his intelligence, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family. He lived a life full of adventure, service, and love, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories for those who knew him. His absence will be deeply felt by family and friends alike.
